At Rhino. our roots come from the open source world.  The majority of our products are developed specifically for the open source community including Rhino Asterisk telephony cards along with our non-branded OEM ready Ceros appliances. We openly work with all to make sure that our cards and other equipment is compatible, including telecommunication standards.

Our source code for all of our PCI and PCI Express drivers is made available publicly through the GPL. We have also written  code to integrate hardware echo cancellation (EC) and Neon Message Indicator (NMI/MWI) into the asterisk. We live Open Source at Rhino and more importantly, we believe in it.

Ceros PBX Appliances

Our PBX systems have been designed from the ground up to run Asterisk, especially our six line graphical OLED display. We individually test every component from the motherboard and CPU to the RAM and power supply to make sure that everything is compatible with the latest versions of Asterisk and the most popular Linux kernels and distributions used by major Asterisk builds.

We offer two different sized PBX systems that are scaled to fit into SoHo to enterprise class environments. With Rhino's low price, choosing a phone system that's right for your needs has never been easier.

Ceros 3U : This is our largest unit and comes in a 3U form factor. Utilizing the latest Intel Core series processors and DDR3 RAM these are our fastest, most powerful systems. The sky is the limit with these new Intel processors, and we work daily to push and determine those limits. We are confident it can take whatever your company might throw at it.

Ceros 1U : This is our smaller offering, sizing in a 1U form factor to save room in a rack environment. Like all Rhino PBX systems it can be used in series with other servers to scale with your needs. Rhino was one of the quickest companies to implement systems with the Intel Atom series. The Ceros 1U is no exception, using the latest Intel Atom processor and chipset. We stay ahead of the competition by working with Intel and using only the latest Intel designs.

Analog and Digital Asterisk Cards

Rhino telephony line cards are tested 100 percent to fully function with the latest versions of Asterisk and DAHDI/Zaptel. Our cards are also tested against legacy telecommunications hardware and conform to international telecommunications standards so you know when you use a Rhino, it will work flawlessly with your carrier. In addition to developing cards that work flawlessly, we have developed some features into our cards that make us stand out above the rest.

Our Analog cards all come standard with hardware echo cancellation. We feel that you should not be up-sold an “option” or “add-on” for something that should have been included at no extra charge. With the low cost of current analog echo cancellation units there is no reason any card should not come with them standard.

In addition all of our cards come with our on-board control element. The control element eliminates PCI bus “bit banging”, which means that our cards require less CPU power, and that more Rhino cards can be used in one computer over other, antiquated solutions. This frees up CPU functions to perform other tasks, such as call recording and IVR solutions.

Fail-over/Redundancy

The Rhino single port analog and digital failover is a self-contained, actively controlled, redundant switch with one input and two outputs (A-B). The failover card utilizes a powerful microcontroller that selects one of the two outputs depending on the condition of the main Asterisk server. The failover uses a loadable Asterisk module (.so) which communicates with the microcontroller by regularly sending an “OK” (watchdog) signal when Asterisk is running. When that “OK” is not received, normally when Asterisk fails, the microcontroller automatically switches ports to the failover device after a user defined duration. If the PC reset feature is enabled (it must be user enabled to operate in this mode), the PC will be reset. In addition, when power fails (USB power) the card automatically switches to the failover port.


In analog mode, the Rhino single port failover allows for the connection of one, two or three telco FXO lines (6 wires in an RJ11, or four lines in a RJ45 if specially terminated) between Rhino FXO ports and single line telephones. In the case of failure, the Rhino single port failover will connect FXO lines to the single line telephones, allowing for both incoming and outgoing calls to be handled on the single line telephones until the server can be brought back on-line.

In digital mode, either an Ethernet or a T1/E1/J1 line can be switched, since all eight wires are routed straight through on the failover card to either the A or B port. In addition, in T1/E1/J1 mode, port 2 of the failover card is designed to be used with digital monitoring systems, with wires 1-2 and 4-5 connected from port 1 to port 2 through four 470 ohm resistors.

All Rhino channel banks feature a single CSU that is software controlled, software programmable and will self configure to the proper mode right out of the box utilizing our AutoT1 automatic configuration software algorithm.

Analog Interfaces

The Rhino channel bank provides either FXS or FXO analog interfaces, both with digital technology that utilizes an embedded SLIC and DAA for monitoring real-time line characteristics.

Power Input

All Rhino channel banks are autoswitching 110VAC,/220VAC with -48V DC input as a secondary or primary power input.
